About Bishop Johnson
Bishop J. Derrick Johnson, a native of Washington, D.C., serves as the Senior Pastor of Gospel Tabernacle Church, a growing congregation in Columbus, Ohio. Before assuming pastoral leadership, he faithfully assisted his father, Elder James H. Johnson, in ministry for 13 years in Washington, D.C. In 2003, he succeeded Bishop Odell McCollum as pastor of Gospel Tabernacle. Guided by the vision “Transforming Lives Through the Power of the Gospel,” Bishop Johnson has led the church in establishing new ministries and strengthening its community outreach. Extending his vision beyond the walls of the church, he launched Transformation Corporation, Inc. in 2008, where he continues to serve as Chief Executive Officer.
A fourth-generation pastor with more than 36 years of ministry experience, Bishop Johnson is also an accomplished musician and author of two books: Pastoring With A Picture Behind You and 100 Wisdom Lessons for Life and Living. Recognized for his academic excellence and leadership, he served five years as a doctoral mentor for the Doctor of Ministry program at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. In May 2014, he was consecrated to the office of Bishop, and two years later was elected to the General Board of the United Holy Church of America. That same year, he was also elected Presiding Bishop of the Northwestern District. In May 2024, he was elected as the Second Vice President of the United Holy Church of America, Inc.
Bishop Johnson’s ministry transcends denominational boundaries. He is widely recognized as a dynamic and insightful preacher and teacher, having ministered not only across the denominational spectrum but also at national conferences and on the Trinity Broadcast Network (TBN). He is academically prepared with a B.S. degree in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park; a Master of Divinity from the Howard University School of Divinity; and a Doctor of Ministry degree from the United Theological Seminary.
He shares his life and ministry with his wife of 35 years, Elect Lady Sabrina Johnson. Together, they are the proud parents of two adult children, Brianna Elaine and James Derrick II.
